Why Blog on Bear?

I’ve been writing daily for over fifteen years, journaling privately as unedited dumps to help me plan, think, and develop ideas.

I was drawn to Bear because of its simple, minimal aesthetic, reminiscent of the 1990s internet—free of promotional clutter, with a smaller, engaged community sharing interesting, non-commercial content. People post good ideas, how-to tips, personal stories, fiction, and poetry—all in one place. I can’t recall how I found Bear; I wasn’t searching. One day, I saw a blog post in my RSS feed that was published on the Bear platform.

Bear's minimal environment made an impression.

I enjoy browsing Bear’s trending and new posts and emailing Bear bloggers, who are always kind in response. Bear Blog attracts helpful, insightful people who share my disappointment in how the web and social media have evolved. This feels like the internet I’ve been missing—away from social media chaos.

Over the past twenty-five years, I’ve maintained several professional blogs but was inconsistent with my own. I started supporting Bear financially in 2022 to back the developer and his vision. Since then, I’ve published seventeen posts. I intend to be more active this year.

My aim is to blog at least once a week now that I’m retired. Building a weekly habit will enhance my writing skills. Unlike my personal journal, which I don’t edit, publishing publicly on Bear encourages discipline and helps me think beyond myself.

I’ve authored two technical books published by Wiley in 2014 and 2016. Editing those books took four times longer than writing the chapter drafts. Using Bear as an online journal will help me develop more efficient editing habits.

I welcome suggestions or resources to improve my writing process. Feel free to reach out if you have advice.
