We Come and We Go
We are born from our mother in a room with helpers if we are lucky. We don’t know where we are or what is happening. Suddenly we are in a new space and we are breathing. Everything is unfamiliar and we need help to eat, clean ourselves, and move around. We have no agency because we don’t know or understand anything.
Over the next twenty one years we have caretakers, we learn, develop our understanding of the world, and gain agency. We become someone with voice. Going through life we make a series of choices. We make mistakes. We learn. We solve problems, or not. We make friends, or not.
Near the end of our lives our freedom and ability to move, think, do may be impaired. At some point we lose our agency. If we are lucky, we have friends, or family, or money and a plan that provides for our needs. We lose our agency. The light goes dark. We think we are alone. Or not. We die.
